Hua Hin, a tranquil seaside town located not far from Bangkok, is becoming a magnet for foreigners looking to enjoy their retirement or semi-retirement in the Land of Smiles. With its unique charm and relaxed lifestyle, Hua Hin has earned the title of "Paradise for Retirees". To gain a deeper understanding of the experiences, needs, and challenges faced by this expatriate community, BeWell and Hua Hin Today collaborated with faculty from the International Business Management Department at Assumption University to conduct one of the most comprehensive and detailed surveys ever conducted in Thailand. The survey results, published on April 2, 2025, revealed intriguing insights into the lives of over 500 foreigners who have chosen Hua Hin as their second home.

Survey Insights: Who are the Retirees in Hua Hin?

The survey collected data from over 500 foreign retirees and semi-retirees aged 55 and above who reside in Hua Hin for at least six months each year. The sample represents a diverse array of nationalities, with respondents from 76 different countries. However, the majority of the demographic data comes from Westerners, with nearly 59% hailing from Western Europe, including the UK, Switzerland, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Germany, and France, followed by approximately 12% from the United States. Additionally, there were fewer respondents from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of Asia and Africa.

Interesting demographic data from the survey reveals that the majority of retirees in Hua Hin are male, accounting for 81% of respondents. About half are aged between 66 and 75, a stage that reflects a full embrace of retirement life. Nearly 68% report being married or living with a partner, with many having long-term relationships with Thai nationals.

Notably, these retirees are not newcomers to Thailand, with an average length of residence in the country of 12.5 years (median 7 years). More than a quarter have lived in Hua Hin for over a decade, and the largest group (31%) has resided in the city for between five and ten years. These figures suggest that the retiree community in Hua Hin is a well-established population deeply connected to the city.

In terms of professional background, the expatriate community residing in Hua Hin is predominantly highly skilled, with 66% having previously held corporate or salaried positions. Approximately 20% are self-employed, and only 3% did not work prior to retirement. This reflects that these retirees often possess experience and stable financial status, which are crucial factors enabling them to live comfortably abroad.

What Attracts People to Hua Hin?

The primary reasons that foreign retirees choose Hua Hin as their destination are varied but all reflect the quality of life the city offers.

  • Peaceful Atmosphere and Relaxed Lifestyle: Hua Hin is distinguished by its tranquil atmosphere and simple way of life, contrasting sharply with the hustle and bustle of larger cities. Many respondents appreciate the calm and clean environment of the town.
  • Proximity to Beaches and Good Weather: Access to beautiful beaches is one of the key factors attracting people. Hua Hin enjoys good weather year-round, especially during the cold and dark winter months in Europe, prompting many foreigners to come for extended stays to escape the chill and enjoy the sunshine and refreshing sea breeze.
  • Affordable Cost of Living: Compared to their home countries or other major cities in Thailand, the cost of living in Hua Hin is considered reasonable and accessible, which is a significant factor that allows retirees to manage their pensions or savings effectively.
  • Convenient Travel: Hua Hin is located not far from Bangkok, making it easy to access modern amenities in the capital. Additionally, Hua Hin itself has everything necessary, including shopping malls, international restaurants, and quality markets.
  • Facilities and Recreational Activities: Hua Hin offers ample opportunities for leisure and a vibrant social environment. 56% of respondents dine out regularly, 51% engage in various sports, particularly golf, which is a major attraction for many, and nearly 43% enjoy the beach regularly. There is also a "Scandinavian Village" for those aged 50 and above who wish to live actively.
  • Quality Healthcare: The healthcare system in Hua Hin is highly rated, with an average satisfaction score of 4.2 out of 5, and nearly 84% of respondents rated it as very good or excellent. Hospitals and medical centers in Hua Hin are highly regarded for their quality of service.

Hua Hin continues to be a standout choice for foreigners looking to retire in Thailand. With its pleasant weather, affordable cost of living, and peaceful lifestyle, the presence of a strong expatriate community, particularly from Europe and Scandinavia, further underscores Hua Hin's potential as a global retirement hub. Listening to and responding to the needs of this demographic will help Hua Hin maintain its position and grow sustainably as a true "Paradise for Retirees".
